I remember a time when laptops used to be synonymous with business. They were high-end computers that you could carry with you and a true technological wonder of the time.

They cost a lot and were the ultimate word in sophistication. The price, coupled with the exclusivity of the device meant that only serious businessmen could afford them, often to bank on the go or take care of important paperwork while traveling.

However, laptops have become ubiquitous today. From students to teachers to businessmen, everyone depends on their laptops now for computing needs. Laptops have become synonymous with computers and are slowly rendering desktop computers obsolete.

The reasons for the laptop’s popularity over its counterpart desktop is obvious. Laptops are essentially miniaturized desktops.

In the early ‘90s, there was a massive demand in the market for desktops that could be carried around by business people to conduct their businesses on the go.

Therefore, manufacturers miniaturized the desktop to form a laptop. The idea was that the machine would be small enough to sit on top of your lap and enable you to work with ease.

The real breakthrough in the technology came from Apple computers and they really were the pioneers of miniaturizing the complex huge CPU unit to a box no thicker than 5 inches.

Apple’s idea was to create an all-in-one machine that could be used as-is. Thus, the laptop. Soon, its popularity began to spread and more and more people were invested in this idea.

As sales skyrocketed, manufacturers spent millions in R & D to miniaturize even more and come up with sleeker versions of the device.

If you looked at a laptop today, an average machine would feature a full HD display, 500 GB of ROM, and at least 4 GB of RAM. All of this will be packed in a casing that’s no thicker than an inch.

If you were to somehow travel back in time 20 years and tell people that we’d achieve this level of miniaturization, people would honestly freak out. That said, we haven’t stopped yet. Every year, manufacturers come up with yet slimmer models with more tech packed into it.
